Tips For Maintaining Your Central Air Conditoning Unit

Posted on

Maintaining your central air conditioning unit is essential if you want to make sure that it is going to run as smoothly as possible when you need it the most. While the steps to maintain the unit are not difficult, they are crucial steps and should not be avoided or postponed. To make sure that you are off to good start, you will want to take the following steps:

Clean Debris Out Of The Interior Of The Unit

As your central air conditioning unit runs, it can gather debris inside of it. All of the debris can be easily cleaned out, but you will need to turn off the power to the unit before getting started. This is for your own safety. Then, you will want to remove the fan base, which is usually located on the top of the machine. To do this, you will need either a wrench or a screwdriver, depending on the model of air conditioner you are working with. You can scoop out the debris by hand or even a wet and dry vacuum to suction everything out.

Clean Out The Fins

This is something that you will do while you have the top opened up. Use a garden hose and spray through the fins, which usually run all the way around the sides of the air conditioning unit, from the inside out. This way, any dirt or debris that was trapped in there will end up on the ground outside of the unit, instead of inside where you just cleaned. If you notice that the air conditioning fins are extra dirty and they are not coming clean with the use of a simple garden hose, you can use a commercial cleaning product that is meant for air conditioners.

Straighten Out Any Bent Fins

Over time, some of the fins may bend a little. It is vital that you are taking the time to inspect all of them to ensure that they are in their proper place. Use a flat head screwdriver to go between the fins that are bent out of shape so you can gently straighten them back out. This is not something that you want to skip out on doing. When the fins are bent over, there is a restriction on the amount of air flow that goes through the central air conditioning unit. The restricted air flow will cause your unit to have to work extra hard to cool down your house and it can cause it to break down a lot sooner than normal.

When you do those few things, you will find that your central air conditioning unit will work nicely throughout the warmer months. Check out a website like http://thurlowsheatingandair.com/ for more information and assistance.
